From straw hats to farm sprays

ImageToday’s Remember When “mystery photo” shows two men standing in front of an agricultural spraying rig in 1987. Who are they, and what were they doing 21 years ago?

ImageLast week’s Remember When “mystery photo” shows Simon Saltzman of The Hub trying a straw hat on the head of Tracy Mayor Manuel Rico in 1946. The photo was taken for “Straw Hat Day,” when local merchants featured straw hats to replace felt hats for summertime wear. In those days, men’s hats were often worn. The photo was taken at The Hub, then operated by Simon and Archie Saltzman at the corner of Seventh Street and Central Avenue, where a Grand Theatre Center for the Arts art gallery is now. Later, the Saltzman brothers moved The Hub to West 10th Street, where the Lighting Gallery is now. Among the Tracyites giving at least some information on the photo were Gloria Saltzman (Simon’s daughter), Pat Ferguson, Jeannie Garcia, Carolyn Arnaudo, Bob Cooper, Audrey Jackson and Frank Lima.
