CHP welcomes cadet

Derrick Roderick of Tracy recently finished his California Highway Patrol cadet training and is assigned to the Castro Valley area. Roderick is a 1995 San Leandro High School graduate and worked as an automotive mechanic before he joined the CHP.


Biz group awards students

Tracy Hispanic Business Group, a committee of the Tracy Chamber of Commerce, gave $500 scholarships to 15 students at its fifth annual Latino Leadership awards banquet April 18.

The scholarships went to Tracy High School students Jessica Perez, Serena Yniquez, Joseph Sanchez and Guillermo Garcia; West High School students Frank Payta, Evangelina Villapudua, Cassandra Carrasco, Anthony Sul, Kricel Gutierrez, Veronica Ramos and Krystal Legardal; Stein High School student Beatriz Flores; Millennium High School students Amber Fuentes and Leticia DeLeon; and Delta Charter High School student Cody Abercrombie.


Teen shines at biotech competition

Tracy High School student Jeff Healy placed first in the forensics category of the Teen Biotech Challenge last week at University of California, Davis.

Healy received a trophy and $300 and will be honored at a banquet May 28.


Local girls named Academic Pentathlon champions

Two local students placed at the San Joaquin Academic Pentathlon Championships on Saturday. Wicklund School sixth-grader Allison Mac placed fifth, and Williams Middle School sixth-grader Angela Mesgarzadeh placed 10th. Both received a $100 savings bond.

Bethany School received a $1,000 grant, and Wicklund School received a $750 grant.
